Journey Through Journals: Building returns

If you peruse our Instagram and X (Twitter), you will have already seen the news: After a short hiatus in our subscription, the journal Building returns to the shelves at the Harrison Library starting with the February 2024 issue coincidentally headlined “A New Chapter”.

Journals are issued on a regular basis – some annually, some monthly, some weekly – which means they are the ideal source of current research and resources.

The most recent issue of the journal will be available on the carousel on the ground floor and back issues are shelved upstairs on the third floor at PER 690, which is located on the shelves just to the left as you leave the central stairs.

Building has been well-rounded cornerstone of the construction industry since 1843, providing key information to all those involved. The journal includes: 

• Reports news and developments in and around the industry, including comment sections and opinion pieces as well as full journalistic articles and features. 
• Provides data and analysis on various topics across a range of sectors. 
• Hosts awards and competitions – its website describes The Building Awards as one of the most prestigious in Construction as it honours “contractors, housebuilders and consultants who have performed best in the previous year”.  
• Includes details on Continuing Professional Development and learning opportunities. 

An exploration into the issues reveals plenty of interesting stories. There are many news articles, analysis, and opinion pieces focusing on the inevitable upcoming election and delving into Labour promises for increased construction and how realistic Starmer’s plans may or may not be.

There is also a summary of everything that has happened surrounding HS2. The issues also includes a cost model on stadium redevelopment, laying out difference aspects of the project and how to estimate cost – A potentially valuable resource for upcoming student projects.

The March issue, acknowledging Woman’s international day which took place in March, has a special feature all about women in the industry, focusing on 12 movers and shakers.

Building has a good selection of content that is both interesting and useful for all construction and engineering members of the university.
